Caveats Before Buying Cheap Bikes

One has to be careful in buying cheap products, lest he truly knows what the phrase "you get what you pay for" truly means. When you're looking to purchase a cheap bike, you have to take care. You'll need to know a little bit more about that bike, whether it's good for you, and if there's something else that is a whole lot better for just a few extra bucks. Before any transactions are made, be sure you understand a few caveats.

Now, cheap doesn't necessarily mean that it's bad, but most times it's far from good quality either. One possible reason that it is even cheap in the first place is because nobody wants it. Then again, it could be because a newer model came out. At any rate, figuring out why the bike is cheap can save you a lot of trouble later on.

For example, fixies are usually cheaper than geared. If you find a cheap bike that looks too good to be true, double check to see if it's a fixie or not. The last thing you want is getting a fixie when you wanted a geared bike. If you like fixies, then it shouldn't be a problem. If the bike is cheap because it's the last stock and the store just wants to get rid of it, or if the store is holding a sale, then go ahead and make the purchase if you like.

Believe it or not, but some actually make the mistake of purchasing cheap bikes only to find out that they bought one that are for kids. This happens a lot more than you think with online shoppers. When purchasing a bike, it's best to always check the specs. Most online stores give the bike measurements or at least provide the option to choose sizes upon checkout.

Another thing you should be careful of, especially when shopping online, is that the bike you're looking to purchase may be used. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, unless you're specifically looking for a brand new product.

At any rate, slightly used bikes still have a good longevity to them. As long as the frame is intact, the other parts shouldn't be hard to find. Sometimes, you can find extremely cheap used bikes that when restored will still not cost as much as a brand new one. Just be sure to buy the used product from reputable sources; or you may be riding a stolen bike.
